Chearavanont Charoen Pokphand Group began as a small seed shop named Chia Tai in Bangkok founded by the Chia brothers, Ek Chor and Siew Whooy, in 1921.The Chia brothers, who arrived in Bangkok in 1919 came from Shantou, China. Their business was importing seeds from China for sale to Thai farmers. Gradually, the business progressed towards the production of animal feed. In 1964, Chia Ek Chor’s youngest son, Dhanin, then 25 took over the leadership of the company. CP then rose to become the world’s fifth largest feed mill operator in the world. In the early 70s, Dhanin decided to extend CP’s operations to include livestock. Dhanin also entered its first joint-venture with U.S.-based Arbor Acres, which had been one of the pioneers in selectively breeding for the purpose of producing a meatier, faster-growing bird. CP imported its first chickens in 1973. At the same time, the company hired foreign nutritionists to help it develop new, higher-yield field formulas. What followed next are breeding farms, slaughterhouses, and processed foods production. From chickens, CP ventured into aquaculture and began breeding fish and shrimps. CP is now the world’s leading supplier of black tiger shrimps. The group’s operations span more than 250 companies in 20 countries – largely in Thailand and China but also in Indonesia, Malaysia, India, and Cambodia. With its vast interests in the area of food, the Group has adopted the slogan “Kitchen of the World.” The company also has stakes in TelecomAsia; Siam Makro, the group’s discount retail chain among others. In his spare time, Chearavanont enjoys breeding Thai chickens and cockfights. Sources: http://www.time.com/time/asia/covers/501040223/chearavanont.html |
