Tiu He also chairs TKC Steel Corporation, an operating and holding company engaged in the manufacturing and distribution of various steel products that operates a billet-making plant in a 20-hectare complex in Iligan City and most recently, the Sterling Bank of Asia. TKC also has an effective controlling equity interest in ZZ Stronghold Steel Works Co. Ltd (ZZS), a company incorporated and based in Zhang Zhou, China, which manufactures and distributes various steel pipe products in China and other export markets. Ben is the eldest of John Tiu Ka Cho. In 1947, the older Tiu established the Union Hardware in Manila, followed by the Manila Steel Corporation, one of the first nail factories in 1950. In the early 1960’s, this was followed by Goodwill Steel and Wire Company and Goodyear Steel Pipe Corporation, which was then the biggest steel maker. The latter became the cornerstone of the JTKC Group of Companies' steel manufacturing operations. In the mid-1970s, John Tiu opened his first of serviced apartments called Dakota Mansion which was soon followed by Mabini Mansion in Manila, Amorsolo Mansion in Makati, and Boulevard Mansion in Manila. In 1990, the historic and famed Gilarmi Apartments along Ayala Avenue was added to the fold. In 1983, Kent Floors, a manufacturer of vinyl tile was established. Ben , who holds a Mechanical Engineering degree from Loyola Marymount University, USA and a Master of Business Administration from the Ateneo de Manila University, started getting active in the family business in 1981. Six years later, in 1987, John Tiu passed away and at only 36, Ben and his five brothers were left with the challenging task and responsibility of continuing what their father started. The JTKC Group of Companies, named after their father, continues to diversify with the establishment of Sterling Bank of Asia and Iremit Inc. Sterling Bank of Asia is a new savings bank that opened in February 2007, while Iremit Inc.is engaged in the business of money remittance from the country’s OFWs around the globe.
