Tan In the late 1980’s, Tan introduced Emperador Brandy was introduced in the market which has been dominated by gin and rum. In 2006, Emperador Brandy became the world’s largest-selling brandy. During the 90’s, his company, Megaworld Corporation began developing high-end properties and residential projects to cater to upper class customers. In 1994, Tan’s Empire East Land Holdings, Inc. answered the needs of the middle and low-income market and built a more affordable residential units. Tan is the pioneer behind the live-work-play concept in building his properties. In 1999, he made a name for himself when he transformed a former textile mill in Libis, Quezon City into what we know today as Eastwood City which houses offices, shopping mall, entertainment centers, condominium, and restaurants. In the early 2000, Tan took advantage of the booming of the call center and business process outsourcing (BPO) market. He is now the biggest developer of BPO companies. After the success of Eastwood City, Tan built other township projects in Metro Manila such as City Place complex in Binondo, Manila; the 25-hectare Newport City complex beside the Villamor Golf Course; the Manhattan Garden City complex at the Araneta Center, Cubao, Quezon City; and the 50-hectare McKinley Hill. In 2005, ALLIANCE Global Group Inc. (AGI), Tan’s investment holding company, purchased a substantial block of 49 percent of the Philippine franchise of McDonald’s Corporation from Golden Arches Development Corporation. Megaworld Corporation has also acquired the 54-hectare old airport lot in Mandurriao for P1.2B. Megaworld has also announced plans to invest P1.5B to develop it into a Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) hub, the first in Western Visayas. Tan was born in Fujian Province.
