William Cheng

William Cheng William Cheng is Malaysia’s “Steel King.” He is the chairman and chief executive officer of Lion Group Malaysia (http://www.lion.com.my/), Malaysia’s biggest steel manufacturer. Cheng’s grandfather founded Lion as a small trading company in Singapore after leaving China in 1920s.

Lion Group’s key assets in Malaysia are two steel mills with a capacity of 3 million tons a year, manufacturing of Suzuki motorcycles, and Parkson Retail which has 26 department stores in Malaysia and 13 in China.

Lion Group’s core business is steel but it also has interests in property development, computer and communication, tires, and pharmaceuticals.

Lion Group also owns Mahkota Hotel Melaka (http://www.mahkotahotel.com.my/). This is located on the waterfront in the heart of Melaka that is adjacent to Mahkota Parade, the city’s most popular shopping and entertainment complex.

Lion Best (http://www.lion.com.my/LionBest.nsf/LB_AboutUs?OpenForm) built a pharmaceutical manufacturing plant in Malacca in 1993.

Likom Division (http://www.likom.com.my/CompInfo/CI_Corporate.asp) is a manufacturer of electronics and computer peripherals.

In 1990, the Lion Group launched The Lion – ASM Foundation to provide funds for various needs in education, charity, and scientific research. To date, the Foundation has sponsored a total of about 360 students.
