Kim Hua The Genting Group(www.genting.com), which manages the Genting Highlands, was founded by Lim Goh Tong, a migrant from Fujian, China, in 1964. From then on, the Group has diversified into many other industries such as palm oil production, property, paper, power generation, oil and gas exploration and cruise boats. The family’s wealth initially came from the successful construction company, Kien Huat Realty Sdn Bhd which Lim founded in 1950. Its major projects include the Ayer Itam Dam, Kelantan’s Kemubu Irrigation Scheme and the Cameron Highlands Hydro Electric Power Project. The Genting Berhad, the investment holding and management company of Genting Group is 39.6% owned by Kien Huat Realty Sdn Bhd, a private company controlled by Lim Goh Tong’s damily. Genting Group via Genting Berhad became involved in palm oil production in 1980 with the acquisition of The Rubber Trust Group. It now has about 134,000 hectares of land in Malaysia and Indonesia. It is one of the leading and lowest cost palm oil producers in Malaysia. In 1994, the Group became involved in the electricity power generation and supply and the paper manufacturing businesses with the acquisition of Genting International Paper Holdings Limited, and in the exploration and production of oil and gas in 1996 under Genting Oil & Gas Limited in July 2007. The family also operates Star Cruises which offers casino gaming activities on board a fleet of cruise ships. In December 2003, due to his poor health, Lim transferred the chairmanship of the Genting Group to his son, Lim Kok Thay. Even after his death, Lim Goh Tong’s family - wife Lee Kim Hua and their children are still among Malaysia’s richest.
